Hey everyone,
I am new here and to Mazdas in general. I just bought a 2000 626 LX I4 5sp with 135,800miles. I have had it for only a couple of days and I hope it will last a long time. The AC needs a little work but so far so good. I am impressed with the 4cyl 5sp combo. I have heard the auto trans have alot of problems and initial acceleration isn't the best but the 5sp is fun to drive. It is still stock and will remain so for a little while atleast until I get everything checked out and get used to driving it. It is the biggest car I have owned (don't laugh). I had a 1989 honda civic hatchback before this so there is a big difference. My wife is pregnant with our second child so I needed somthing bigger for the family but still enjoy to drive hence the manual transmission. Anyway I think I have bored you guys enough so if you guys got any tips or things to look out for on this model let me know and yes I know about the SEARCH function. Thanks.

You probably picked one of the most practical cars, yet it's still fun to drive. Nice work.

Thanks guys, I am happy to hear that.
To be perfectly honest I wasn't too crazy about the 626 at first but now that I have been driving it it has really grown on me. I am glad I got it. I am used to zipping around town in smaller cars so I am still getting used the size and weight but the fun to drive factor is definitely there.
So far I just changed the oil and spark plugs. I am going to change the timing belt too because its got over 135,000 miles and I am not sure when was the last time it was changed if it was changes at all.

Welcome to the forum! In addition to the normal search at the top, there is a link titled PMX626.com which can be very helpful. It does a custom Google search with the MX6, Probe, and 626 forums.

If you ever want to tune it.. Look over the Atlantic.. Our top-model has 100kW on it. Basically the only difference is between the spark plugs and ECU. I think i remembered correctly that you have also distributorless ignition ..
so when putting an ECU from my car to yours - you should have 97kW ;)
we proved it on my MX6.. The cheapest way to gain 12kW without doing anything.
It's also easy to mend yourself and lots of manuals on the web. i've enjoyed this I4-5m combo for almost 4 years now.. not gonna change this.. :P

Have I been asleep? I've never heard that. That would be really cool if it works.

Some of our 4cyls have distributors. They had them up until it switched body styles to the GF in 98.

I guess you have been asleep, :D
Yes, when the first GF arrived in june 97, it had coil packs and iridium-plugs. I tried to use the old replacement - NGK BP6ES, but it idled badly and died. Then i put back the old ones.. Newer GF has CEL, it instantly comes on...
Bacially the difference between 85kW and 100kW is the ECU. And when we installed it to the MX6 with distry, it performed a little better. It went thru a whole full tank of gas and the fuel efficiency was slightly better.
Dyno-stand gave us the number 96.8kW. And the Mazda service said the same thing. So talk to someone from Germany, there are lots and lots of High Power GFs in the junkyards..
I dunno, if the Protege5 in your country has 96kW? That car has the same ECU. ;) Try it.

Edit: i checked, Protege5 has 97kW. It should have the same ECU as the european HighPow GF.
